Upside-
WOW! If you have ANY interest Egypt this exhibit will dazzle you.
The collection, IMO, was certainly worth the ticket cost. You are able to get up close and personal with the pieces. (Of course, there is no touching!)
Basic information provided on each artifact. (material, date, location found)

Downside-
King Tut's mummy is not included in the exhibit. When asked, the guards will tell you he is in Egypt.
No photography. (I do understand this can damage the artifacts.)
Information signs WAY too small. (There are groups of 50 people traveling through this with you. The signs are approximately 10x12.)
Not enough information on the signs. (I believe this exhibit was more about dazzle than real information. Or, maybe as a homeschooling mom I simply *want* more information.)

So, Daddy bought us the Official Exhibition Catalogue. :)


This is a great book with loads of information. However, it is pricey. It cost approx. $50. Fifty dollars! This is WAY more than I normally spend on one book. (Heck, I currently have 10 books picked on PBS for a total price of $30.) I wasn't really sure if we needed such an expensive book. Daddy persisted. I'm glad he did. If you visit the exhibit, you must purchase this item. It has a beautiful photo of each piece in the exhibit along with a more detailed description and history. It's kind of like having all the pictures you couldn't take on the tour.

Well, at least they come right out and say what the cards are for! (Just realized you can't see the name. They are called "patience cards".)

I was very interested in how they make blind text books using today's math methods. What I mean is, most of today's math is highly visual. In elementary public school math (Gag) they are highly dependant upon the child counting pictures. Many times the kids have to draw pictures in their "math" book, etc....
This picture shows the older methods of teaching math to blind children. (Anyone wanna bet it's more effective than modern day methods?) Now they use raised pictures for the kids to count.



There was also a kind man attending our tour who asked something along the lines of, "What about spending time with other kids? That's what a lot of them worry about." Now, keep in mind, this was a kind (and wonderfully curious) older man. Picture Archie Bunker only child like and kind.
I feel a tiny bit sad that I responded a bit... well... sarcastic. It was something along the lines of, "Many people seem to think you need to make socialization official. Kind of like scheduling a time and place for the kids to interact. 'Okay kids, now go socialize.' It's pretty silly when you think of it."

Thankfully, he agreed and mentioned his desire for his grandchildren to be homeschooled. He says, "They don't teach you anything in those schools anymore."

I agree.

Orangutans are very interesting creatures.

Lorikeets at the zoo

We visited the zoo this week and were able to feed the lorikeets. It was really neat but if you notice, we did quite a bit of covering ears. Unfortunately, lorikeets believe ears are tasty.
