The TV, games, kids, and the result

Okay. The TV came to stay with us for one week.... That was over one month ago.

Add this to recent trips to friend's homes where the kids watched "children's" TV shows, played (virtually no skills required) online games, and played violent gameboys and/or Xbox games for hours on end.

So, in other words, for the last month my kids have enjoyed (at least part time) all the comforts of the modern day kid. (Actually less considering the average child has access to all these things in their own bedroom anytime they wish.)

The result?

Dumbed down and more violent kids, of course.

Why would anyone think watching intentionally stupid acting characters will produce an intelligent response? (Have you seen the "kids" programming these days? It's purely retarded I tell ya. I mean retarded literally.)
And why are we surprised when we see the kids acting out the latest "duel" on their favorite violent cartoon?

Even as a teenage mother, I recognized the effect of TV programming on children. Back then I thought it was possible to keep the TV while choosing heavy doses of educational programing with the scattering of mind junk thrown in from time to time.

These days, I'm sick of the TV all together. Sometimes there are great programs on some pretty good channels. But, even those channels are subject to advertisements. And let me tell you, those TV ads are the most illogical things I have ever seen in my life. I have no desire to allow my kids to believe that's healthy thought. Neither do I yearn to constantly point out the illogical nature of said commercials.

So, the TV will leave today.
I'm done.

  1. I agree with you! The garbage on TV is sickening. And I know what you mean about the commercials. Even when you are watching a decent show the ads will get you. I could easily live without the TV. My husband, while beginning to see my point, isn't ready to give it the big shove off just yet. I'm trying to entice him with the savings on the cable bill.
    Does your husband protest?

  2. Slowly, slowly, Gary is starting to see my point (after 11 years of back and forth with the cable). He has started threatening to get rid of the TV and all video games. I can't wait until he actually agrees to it.

I can definitely see a difference in my children when they watch TV/play video games vs. when they don't. I'd rather the not watching attitude.

LOL! Well, we have never been a big TV family. Other than this recent adventure, we have only had cable TV once in our marraige. So, I think that was to our advantage.

We finally got rid of our TVs because of accidents. Lightening struck one TV and the other was accidentally dropped. These happened within a short time from each other.

In the early "no TV" days my DH would take me through the TV section of the local stores. I think he kind of wanted one....
Now he is on board with our family being TV free and defends it steadfastly.

Being a drill instructor for the past almost 3 years has helped him in this decision. He sees multitudes of new soldiers, fresh out of high school, who have no idea how to live in the real world. It's really not surprising when you realize they really haven't lived in the real world. They can tell you all about the latest pop stars fall, the cheat codes for video games, and the biggest viral hit of the year, but they can't do a single push up or remember to bathe daily. It's crazy I tell ya! Crazy!

  4. I am so glad I found your blog! I've been enjoying reading through it! We have a tv, but no cable. With "bunny ears" we are able to watch the local news and PBS when we wish to. That's more than enough for me! I've never understood people's willingness to pay to have garbage and advertising (which in my mind is really just more garbage!) piped directly into their homes. Shouldn't they be paying us? LOL.
