penmanship character quotes February 25 - 29

Bertrand Russell:

Collective fear stimulates herd instinct, and tends to produce ferocity toward those who are not regarded as members of the herd.

Thomas Jefferson:
Difference of opinion is helpful in religion.

Side note- I just had to use two quotes this week. Both of these are simply too good to pass up.
I found theseb quotes while looking for tolerance quotes. The boys and I have had many interesting discussions springboarding from lack of religious tolerance amongst some homeschoolers.

Live and learn.

  1. The Thomas Jefferson quote you have reminded me of one I read this weekend: "The last time politics and religion were mixed people were burned at the stake."

Unfortunately, my homeschool-mommy brain would only allow me to retain the quote, not who said it ;)

  2. That's an interesting quote and I appreciate the idea, but I don't believe it's entirely accurate. Our modern day politics have Christianity woven blatently throughout. (For example- Our very money.)

  3. Where do you get these penmanship character quotes?

Do you post them on the board and have the boys copy them for daily copywork practice?

  4. I found these quotes by Googling "tolerance quotes". Here's the link-http://www.wisdomquotes.com/cat_tolerance.html

You're right, each Monday I copy these quotes to the chalkboard.
Originally, the boys had one quote per *day* to copy in their best penmanship.
Then, we evolved into one quote per week (in best penmanship) which is to be memorized by the end of said week.
Lately the quotes have evolved into one per week which we discuss on Monday and they copy each day in their best penmanship.
For me it's more about the quotes than the penmanship. :)
